Bouddhanath

The stupa of bouddhanath lies 8 kilometer east from the Katmandu valley. This colossal Buddhist stupa is the biggest lamest temple in the world. It is built in pagoda style with all seeing two eyes of Buddha just above the dome watching in all four directions. In the dome shape structure, the holy relics of Buddha are believed to be kept preserved. Around the stupa on all sides there are prayer wheels with the mantra "OM MANI PADME HUM" inscribed on them. In the northern side of the temple there is a small shrine of Ajima, the Buddhist goddess who takes care of children. At presents there are five Tibetan monasteries where Tibetan Buddhist monks offer homage to the Buddhist deities.
